Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE —Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis)—ornamental shrub —Size: 5-12’ (20’) tall by 4-8’ wide —Site: full sun to part-shade —USDA Hardiness Zones: 5-10 —To Propagate: Seed requires no pretreatment. An easily grown ornamental shrub with clean, glossy leaves and most unusual spherical flower heads—the long styles give the flower heads a distinctive pincushion appearance and are slightly honey-sweet in fragrance. The flowers of buttonbush are extremely attractive to pollinators such as hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, and other insect pollinators. Flowers mature to a beautiful deep red before forming brown, hard, spherical fruits which can be used for ornamental purposes. Native to wet, open areas, lake and river riparian areas, and other bottomlands and adaptable to many soil types. A superb plant for low, wet areas in the yard that do not drain well though in such situations buttonbush will be smaller in stature. In semi-aquatic conditions buttonbush can reach great heights. Easy to maintain at any height because this shrub takes well to being cut back to the ground to rejuvenate it or to maintain it at a smaller height—very old specimens can form a small tree up to 20’ tall. Can be used as an informal hedge. Blooms on new growth so will still flower if cut to the ground. Native over a very wide range from California to Florida north through the Midwest to Maine and Canada. A shrub with attractive ornamental qualities that is also very utilitarian. Seed offered is the whole nutlets—not the fruiting ball—which is typical for this species; i.e. the seed—nut—is not removed from the nutlet. This does not affect germination. Note: If you order more than one lot of one species of seeds, for example you place two orders of 100 seeds, or whatever variation is offered, we assume you want 200 seeds and your order will be sent in one seed packet.
